Women seek breast surgery for a myriad of reasons. Breast reduction surgery involves making incisions around the nipple-areola complex (pigmented area). This incision is then extended vertically below the nipple as far as the inframammary crease under the breast. Through these incisions, the excess breast tissue is removed and the nipple-areola moved upward to a more desirable position. So in essence, breast reduction and lift are being performed at the same time. After the nipple is moved to its new position, the incisions are then closed around the nipple and over the lifted breast. The surgery will take approximately 2 to 3 hours, depending on the degree of macromastia and the amount of breast tissue that needs to be excised.
Breast reduction is performed either on an outpatient basis at an ambulatory surgical care facility or in the hospital. Patients can typically go home the day of their surgery, but occasionally an overnight stay is recommended. We can advise on recovery facilities if you would like additional private post-operative care in the days following surgery.
