BREAST ASYMMETRY CORRECTION

Most people have slightly different sized or shaped breasts, known as breast asymmetry. In some cases, the breast asymmetry is so marked that a surgical procedure is desired. The exact nature of the asymmetry is not always readily apparent but most patients are aware of a difference in volume, or amount, of breast tissue. But what is not so obvious is that, this is usually accompanied by more skin on the larger side, a larger nipple-areola complex, a difference in the relative position of the nipple-areola complex, a difference in the location of the inframammary fold, and sometimes even a different prominence of the underlying rib cage. Not all of these facets of the asymmetry may be present and not all need be addressed to achieve an acceptable degree of symmetry. Depending on the degree of asymmetry, a number of procedures are available for correction of the breast asymmetry. Dr. Agha's philosophy is to obtain symmetrically shaped, sized and positioned breasts through minimal incisions and scars. He pursues a customized approach for each patient that involves direct input from you.

The best approach is determined by your desire on how to balance the breasts. You may want to reduce the larger breast or to augment the smaller breast with an implant.

Correcting breast asymmetry not only helps women improve their appearance, but it can also provide a boost to their self-esteem and self-confidence.

TYPICAL PATIENTS

Breast Asymmetry Correction This patient presented to Dr. Agha with a cup size difference between her breasts. Although the breast shape and form are symmetrical, she displays asymmetry in term of breast volume. She will benefit from augmentation of the right breast, with or without a breast lift.
This patient presented to Dr. Agha with two cup size difference between her breasts. Although, the breast shapes appear symmetrical, she has sagging of the left breast and nipple-areola complex. She will benefit from breast augmentation of the right breast with correction of the position of both nipple-areola complexes through a breast lift.
Breast Asymmetry Correction This patient presented to Dr. Agha with a cup size difference between her breasts. She has significant under-development of the right breast, asymmetric nipple-areola positions, as well as inframammary fold positions. She will benefit from augmentation of the right breast, or both breasts with implants of different volumes. She will also need lowering of the right inframammary fold and correction of left nipple-areola position.
This patient presented to Dr. Agha with asymmetry of her breast shape and wished to undergo breast augmentation. Although, her breast volumes are relatively symmetrical, her breasts are asymmetrical in terms of the shape and position, diameter of nipple-areola complexes, as well as location of the inframammary folds. She will benefit from augmentation of both breasts, lowering of the left inframammary fold, and elevation of the left nipple-areola.
This patient presented to Dr. Agha with minimal breast tissue and skin on the left. Her breasts are asymmetrical in term of volume, shape and form. She will benefit from augmentation of the right breast, or both breasts; with right breast lift and reshaping.
Breast Asymmetry Correction This patient presents to Dr. Agha with significant asymmetry of her breast in term of volume and shape. She will benefit form breast reduction of her left breast and breast augmentation and lift of the right one.

CONSULTATION

During your initial consultation, Dr. Agha will inquire about your general health status, pre-existing health conditions, prior surgeries, medications that you are taking, allergies, and smoking habits. Relevant questions in the history include:

  • A detailed breast history of masses or lesions
  • Results of a mammogram for those of 35 years old or more
  • Family history of breast cancers
  • Pregnancies and their effects on your breasts
  • Previous surgical procedures on the breast or abdomen
  • A detailed history of current medical problems, e.g. heart disease, diabetes, and a history of thromboembolic disease, connective tissue disorders and wound healing problems.

It is important that you be thorough when providing the requested information as they help to prevent complications during your care. When asked about medications, be sure to include any diet pills, vitamin or herbal preparations, since some vitamins and herbal medications can affect your blood pressure and clotting ability. Honesty regarding your smoking and alcohol use is also very important, as these may have a profound impact on your recovery period and your ability to heal following your procedure.

After reviewing your medical, breast and family history, Dr. Agha will discuss your concerns, priorities and motivations for pursuing plastic surgery. Dr. Agha will then proceed with examining your breast, and making appropriate measurements of your breast parameters. He will assess multiple factors including, breast symmetry, form, shape, inframammary fold position, degree of sagging, and skin quality. He will then tailor a treatment plan that will attempt to address as many of aspects of the asymmetry as possible.

He will subsequently provide you with information on different options, the advantages and disadvantages of the each procedure, and potential risk and complications of each surgery. Finally, considering your input, Dr Agha will plan an appropriate procedure (s) to best suit your anatomy, and meet your desires and expectations.

At the completion of your consultation, you will be given a written estimate of the cost of your procedure. At this time, you will also have the option to schedule your procedure if you so choose. You are encouraged to bring your spouse, significant other, family member, or a friend to your consultation.

If you think you might be a good candidate for a breast asymmetry correction, this page will give you a basic understanding of the procedure and the results you can expect. The cornerstone of Dr. Agha's approach is to customize treatment to your specific needs and circumstances, and to ensure that you have an adequate understanding of the procedure so that you are able to make a fully informed decision. This will help you achieve the appearance you desire with the least invasive procedure available.

Prior to surgery, you may be asked to obtain specific lab tests and a medical evaluation.

BREAST ASYMMETRY CORRECTION

The nature of the surgical approach to breast asymmetry is varied. Surgical correction may include:

  1. Breast augmentation with an implant to enhance the smaller breast to match the larger breast
  2. Breast reduction to decrease the size of the larger breast to match the smaller breast
  3. Breast augmentation with implants of different sizes
  4. Breast augmentation or reduction with breast lift (mastopexy)
  5. In severe asymmetries, a combination of the mentioned procedures may be desirable.

WHERE WILL YOUR PROCEDURE BE PERFORMED?

Dr. Agha has been granted staff privileges at several local hospitals and outpatient surgery centers. In the interest of the safety of his patients, he only performs surgery in fully accredited facilities with the proper services and staff.

DETAILS OF YOUR PROCEDURE

Breast asymmetry correction usually takes about two to four hours depending on the complexity of the breast asymmetry. After you have changed into a gown and had your intravenous line started, Dr. Agha will mark certain landmarks on your chest in the preoperative holding area. This ensures proper surgical planning. He will also review the entire operative plan with you including incision, location, implant type and size, and potential complications. You will then be given a dose of intravenous antibiotics as a precautionary measure.

What happens during breast augmentation surgery?

Step 1 - Anesthesia

Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. The choices include intravenous sedation and general anesthesia. After initiation of anesthesia in the operating room, Dr. Agha will inject a solution of local anesthetics at the intended incision site, and into the muscle under which the implants will be placed. This injection solution consists of a combination of lidocaine, marcaine, and epinephrine. The lidocaine and marcaine will numb the surgical site for several hours after the surgery and decrease your sensation of pain postoperatively. The epinephrine causes constriction of the blood vessels at the surgical site, reducing your potential for bleeding and bruising.

Step 2 - The incision

Next, Dr. Agha will make the incisions necessary for breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast reduction surgery.

Step 3- Closing the incisions

Incisions are carefully closed with absorbable sutures to minimize your scar. Drains are rare. Over time the incision lines will fade. A sterile dressing is applied to the incisions, and a soft surgical bra is placed over your breasts.
