Dr. Giorgio Fischer, a gynecologist from Italy, was one of the original pioneers of liposuction in 1974. By 1978, the procedure was developed further by two French doctors, Fournier and Illouz. Although liposuction was becoming popular, patients complained of undesirable rippling of the skin. There were some cases of excessive bleeding. New techniques for liposuction were developed that involved the use of smaller instruments and local anesthesia. These advances resolved the excessive bleeding issues and problems with depressions in the skin. During the past decade, liposuction has benefited from several new refinements. One technique that is commonly used by Dr. Agha and most other Plastic Surgeons is called “tumescent liposuction.” It involves injecting a medicated solution into fatty areas before the fat removal process. The fluid contains a salt solution, lidocaine (local anesthetic), and epinephrine. Epinephrine is a drug that contracts blood vessels and reduces blood loss from liposuction procedures.
Today, board certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Agha performs the tumescent technique of liposculpture with ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty (UAL) for select patients at his Southern California practice. Both liposuction and ultrasonic liposuction are extremely effective as single procedures or combined with a more comprehensive body contouring plan.
